TEHRAN (IQNA) – The 24th edition of the national Quran week programs got underway in Algeria during a ceremony on Tuesday.

Minister of Religious Affairs and Awqaf (Endowments) Youcef Belmehdi attended the ceremony at a Quranic school in the city of Beni Abbes in western Algeria.

In an address, he underlined the important role of Quranic schools in teaching the Quran to children and preserving the Islamic culture.

He said one of the purposes of establishing and developing Quranic schools is encouraging kids at the local and national levels to memorize the Quran and promote the Quranic culture in families.

This year’s national Quran week in Algeria is held with the motto of “Hijra (migration) in Holy Quran, Devotion to Homeland, Work and Faith”.

The motto of last year’s national Quran week was “Love for Homeland, Ethical Dimension and National Commitment”.

The city of Beni Abbes is hosting the week’s events under the supervision of a number of university scholars and prayer leaders.

Some 200 individuals from different provinces of the country are taking part in the programs.

The city is also hosting a national Quran competition on memorization of the Holy Quran for different age groups and in various categories.

Algeria is an Arab country in North Africa. Muslims make up about ninety-nine percent of the country’s population.
